Working After Retirement

Many employees return to work after retirement for various reasons. If you are thinking of going back to work for your former employer, or any other PSRS-covered employer, it is important to understand how working after retirement can affect the payment of your retirement benefits.  For complete rules and requirements, view your Member Handbook or contact us.

If you work after PSRS retirement and want to continue to receive your monthly retirement benefits, you must:

  1. Properly terminate all pre-retirement employment with all PSRS-covered employers,
  2. Keep a record of your part-time or temporary-substitute post-retirement work with PSRS-covered employers, and
  3. Stay within the limits on hours worked and earnings from post-retirement work for PSRS-covered employers.

If it is determined that you were employed in a position not in compliance with the rules and requirements for working after retirement, you will be required to reimburse PSRS for all retirement benefits paid during the employment, including funds in a PLSO distribution, and pay contributions that may have been required.

Your post-retirement earnings at PSRS-covered employers may be subject to Social Security taxes. Contact your employer for more information.
